For many, it’s love at first bite. Even those who are squeamish about eating oysters reach back for more. What is this delectable morsel that remains fresh in the eater’s mind, even years later? Drago’s chargrilled oysters.
It is simply a MUST to go to Drago’s when you come to New Orleans. Located in the Hilton hotel by the Riverwalk Mall, it’s easy to find and there is plenty of seating. Loved as much by locals as by travelers, the oysters are perfectly seasoned and doused with cheese and painted with garlic butter before broiling to perfection over an open flame. Do chew lightly as small pieces of shell and real pearls are sometimes found. There are others that claim their chargrilled oysters are just us good, but trust us, Drago’s is definitely the best you can get downtown. They even raise their own oysters to ensure quality.
Drago, from Yugoslavia, moved to the U.S. to escape the aftermath of World War II, as did his future wife, Klara. In true New Orleanian passionate fashion, they met at Mardi Gras and married three weeks later. Their son, Tommy, is the originator of their famous chargrilled oysters.
